Blueprint: Affordable Housing
A two day design-lab and 3-month incubator that works to solve issues around affordable housing in York Region that can be applied globally.
Blueprint is an annual event employing design thinking principles and
facilitates the sharing of ideas related to a social issue affecting York Region. This two day event teaches participants about using design thinking processes to approach challenges in the community and create unique solutions. In the fall of 2016, Blueprint looked at affordable housing in York Region.
Blueprint is an element of the communityBUILD program, an initiative that promotes the development of social innovation in York Region through support of mission-driven entrepreneurs. The program was launched in early 2016 in partnership with ventureLAB, Seneca College, York University and United Way Toronto & York Region.
Why Affordable Housing?
As the cost of living continues to rise, many low to moderate income households in York Region are having difficulty finding affordable housing, and the wait to receive government-subsidized housing can exceed 5 years. Access to safe and affordable housing is a basic human need, and increasing the availability of affordable housing would help reduce the necessity for desperate choices about which essential items and services are affordable on a limited budget.
What are the goals of Blueprint?
Blueprint’s facilitated collaboration process will help inspire participants to develop their design thinking capabilities and apply them to a real world issue while networking with like-minded social innovators.
The goal of Blueprint is to generate solutions that are both unconventional and potentially feasible while broadening the discussion around this important issue. The Blueprint finalists from the two-day design lab had the opportunity to participate in a 3 month incubator program following to further develop their ideas and potentially bring them to market. This portion of the program wraps up on May 25, 2017 with a celebration and presentation.
