Dr. Dave Williams recognized in Ottawa for commitment to healthcare excellence and dedication to advancing Canada’s Space Program
Newmarket, Ontario – May 7, 2014 – Earlier today, Southlake Regional Health Centre President and CEO and Canadian Astronaut Dr. Dave Williams was invested into the Order of Canada by His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada.
Appointed as an Officer (O.C) of the Order of Canada in late June 2013, Dr. Williams was officially recognized today for his commitment to healthcare excellence and his dedication to advancing Canada’s Space Program. “I am tremendously honoured and humbled by this once-in-a-lifetime acknowledgement,” said Dr. Williams. “Throughout my life, I have chosen career paths that have enabled me to play a role in improving the lives of others. Being recognized for my passion is truly amazing, and I would like to congratulate all of my fellow recipients. Today, I share this achievement with every other Canadian who is committed to making a difference.”
The Order of Canada was created in 1967 by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, to recognize outstanding achievement, dedication to community and service to the nation. Since its creation, more than 6,000 people from all sectors of society have been invested into the Order of Canada.
A veteran of two space flights as a Canadian Space Agency astronaut, Dr. Williams has played an instrumental role in understanding space and advancing astronaut health. During his time in space, Dr. Williams contributed to the construction of the International Space Station and conducted neuroscience investigations of the effect of weightlessness on the nervous system. Dr. Williams is also an accomplished emergency room physician, and following his space flights, served as the Director of Space and Life Sciences at NASA, where he implemented changes to improve the safety procedures for all space flight crews. He joined Southlake in 2011 as President and CEO, where he has been committed to the delivery of safe, quality care and the continuous pursuit of healthcare excellence. This is the third in a number of recent outstanding achievements for Dr. Williams. In 2012, he was honoured with a Diamond Jubilee Medal and became the first hospital CEO to be inducted into Canada’s Aviation Hall of Fame.
