Position Profile

Reporting to the Director, Hardware Engineering Lab, this role In this role, you’ll have the opportunity to work with a wide range of professionals and companies including all ventureLAB teams, tech entrepreneurs, industry executives, public and private sector partners. Located in the IBM Innovation Space-Markham Convergence Centre, you’ll be exposed to a wide range of globally disruptive ideas, products and people


Tasks & Responsibilities:

Working closely with the Director, Hardware Engineering Lab, you will:

Support all functions and activities in the Hardware Engineering Lab such as:

  • Inventory, schedule and maintain all Engineering Lab test equipment.
  • Assist ventureLAB clients/customers for their needs for testing and usage of the Engineering Lab.
  • Supervise activities and personnel working in the Engineering Lab.
  • Observe all health & safety policies (e.g. lifting of heavy items) and following all mandated COVID policies.


Suggest ideas and recommendations to improve the Engineering Lab with your input as well from our clients/customers.


Manage the Phase 3 Lab project such as:

  • Attend meetings with outside vendors for project needs.
  • Be onsite when vendors are present to either deliver/receive products or execute services.
  • Assist in working on tasks which could vary to assist in the Phase 3 completion goal of Q4 2021.


Application development if possible….

  • Assist to develop and maintain the Lab schedule for our ventureLAB clients/customers.
  • Assist to maintain and improve inventory support for Phase 1, 2 and 3.
  • Assist in all communication between the Engineering Lab and the ventureLAB clients/customers.

Produce accurate documents, with a keen eye for details


The Hardware Catalyst Initiative is Canada’s only lab and incubator for founders building hardware and semiconductor-focused products, enabling the creation of transformative technologies that will power our products of tomorrow — including healthcare technology, consumer electronics, telecommunications, smart energy, connected transportation, and more. 



  •     Enrolled in or recently graduated from an electrical engineering program or computer science program in college or university.
  •     A passion for being part of an exciting team looking to make a difference in their work.
  •     Project management experience is an asset.
  •     An interest in technology, entrepreneurship and start-ups
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office and G-Suite
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent time-management and organizational skills
  • Demonstrates great interpersonal skills along with excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Must be a hands-on self-starter with the ability to manage multiple tasks and shifting priorities
  • Strong service mentality, and a great team player
  • Experience working with start-ups is an asset


Additional Information


Due to ongoing COVID-19 restrictions, this position will work remotely as well as onsite for the duration of this contract. All Safety protocols must be followed.


Please also note that the position availability is contingent on the approval of the Career Ready Program.


Candidates must meet Career Ready program criteria to be eligible for consideration:

  • Either a Canadian Citizen, permanent resident or a protected person defined by the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act
  • Must be registered as a full time student in a Canadian post-secondary institution program (unofficial transcript will suffice)
  • The student must not be an international student with a work permit

Compensation is $16/hr with an up-to 35-hour work week. Please note this is a contract position ending on or before December 23, 2021.
