Laboratory Assistant - Job ID 202109

Note: This is an 8-week contract position (35 hours/week)


In this role, you’ll have the opportunity to work with a wide range of professionals, companies including the ventureLAB team, tech entrepreneurs, industry executives, public and private sector partners. Located in the IBM Innovation Space-Markham Convergence Centre, you’ll be exposed to a wide range of globally disruptive ideas, products and people.

Due to ongoing COVID-19 restrictions, this position will work remotely for the duration of this contract. Onsite access is required at times due to the nature of this position which require safety protocols to be followed.]


Tasks and Responsibilities

Working closely with the Director, HCI Electrical Engineer Lab, you will:

  • Support all functions and activities in the HCI Electrical Engineering Lab such as:
  • Inventory, schedule and maintain all HCI Electrical Engineering Lab test equipment.
  • Assist ventureLAB clients for needs that the HCI Electrical Engineering Lab provides.
  • Supervise activities and personnel working in the Lab.
  • Suggest ideas and recommendations to improve the Lab from yourself as well as the clients.


Assist to manage Lab project for the HCI program such as:

  • Attend meetings with outside vendors for projects needing quotes.
  • Be onsite when vendors are present to either deliver products or execute services.
  • Assist in working on tasks which could vary to assist this Phase 2 gets completed by mid-summer.
  • Assist to develop a Lab schedule for publishing out to ventureLAB clients.
  • Assist to maintain and improve inventory support in all Labs.
  • Assist in all communication websites or applications between the HCI Lab and the ventureLAB clients.
  • Produce accurate documents, with a keen eye to details



  • Eligible for the Canada Summer Jobs Program
  • Enrolled in or recently graduated from an electrical engineering program or computer science program in college or university.
  • A passion for being part of an exciting team looking to make a difference in their work
  • Project management experience an asset
  • An interest in technology, entrepreneurship and start-ups


Canada Summer Jobs Program Criteria

Applicant is:

  • between 15 and 30 years of age (inclusive) at the start of employment;
  • is a Canadian Citizen, permanent resident, or person on whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act* and
  • have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.


*International students are not eligible. Recent immigrants are eligible if they are Canadian citizens or permanent residents.
