5 Companies to Watch in 2020

ventureLAB is a leading technology hub located in Markham in York Region, Canada’s second largest tech cluster. Since 2011, we’ve supported over 2,000 innovative tech businesses with mentorship, curated programming, and access to resources. Our companies build innovative solutions in Hardware and Enterprise Software, Health, Advanced Technology, and FinTech. Their products positively impact Ontarians and Canadians, and put Markham on the map as a global tech hub. In 2020, these are five ventureLAB-supported companies we’re keeping our eyes on.

1. Mero Technologies

Property Technology

For years, building owners have hired property managers to care for their facilities, and property managers have hired people and cleaning services to do the work. Now, buildings are bigger, and caring for them is more complex: but the basic dynamics are the same. Mero Technologies fundamentally changes the way buildings are managed.

Mero Technologies enables property managers to maintain buildings, and manage the crews hired to do it, with real-time supply status alerts saving them time and money. The supply savings alone (up to 30%) represent real money savings, but beyond that, Mero Technologies reduces what plagues property managers most: responding to the latest daily crisis.

2. TROES

Clean Technology

TROES is a Canadian-based, Advanced Battery Energy Storage company, specializing in Smart Distributed Energy Storage solutions.

TROES develops, designs, manufactures, and delivers high-performance, cloud-based energy storage systems. Their energy storage systems (ESS) applications can be used residentially or commercially, with major benefits, including:

  •     Reduced costs
  •     Alleviating power grid congestion
  •     Energy savings
  •     Environmental benefits

In 2019, TROES launched a commercialized Micro-Grid Battery Energy Storage System at Sky Clean Energy’s jobsite in Markham. Sky Clean Energy (a Sky Solar’s company) is a full turnkey renewable energy developer. The 100kWh/30kW BESS is integrated in a Vehicle to Grid Hybrid Power Conversion System.

In November 2019, TROES won the inaugural Pitch Competition at Made in York Region: The Future of Tech, receiving $10,000.

3. Caribou

Advanced Health

Caribou is a proudly Canadian company building technology that improves the quality of life for everyone in the home care industry. Their platform is designed to elevate the home care experience for families, agencies, and professional caregivers by creating a more responsive connection between those who need care and those who provide it.

Families struggle to find trusted, last-minute help for their loved ones at home. Ironically, professional caregivers at the average home care agency often sit idle and work fewer hours than desired. Caribou’s platform turns idle caregiver time into a flexible home care market.

Intelense’s product has the ability to change the lives of millions worldwide, creating a positive change on a global scale. In 2019, Intelense was one of 9 companies selected for the Dubai Smart City Accelerator program, out of more than 1300+ companies that applied.
